Causes of Distracted Driving
Tuesday, August 7, 2018
Sometimes you might be adjusting the car’s A/C or fiddling with the radio while driving and the next thing you know is that you have crashed. Distracted driving is a major cause of accidents and fatality. Hundreds of people die and thousands are injured each day due to driver’s lack of attention.
Distracted driving is when the driver is involved in an activity other than operating the vehicle, eventually losing focus on the traffic and road conditions. Distractions could include any type of activity or situation which makes you do other things other than focusing on driving. In this article, we will list down the main factors which cause distractions while driving.
Causes of Distracted Driving
Cell phone: Using cell phone, either for call or texting, is one of the biggest reasons for distracting the driver. You might hit a pedestrian or crash into another vehicle if you are not observing the road and instead chatting with your friend.
Passengers: If your passengers are noisy and disturbing, you might consider calming them down. Drivers, especially new ones, need to be free from any disturbances within the car particularly when they are going on a long road trip.
Radio or A/C: Adjusting the car’s A/C or looking for your favorite radio channel while driving can be extremely dangerous. Although these controls are build in a way that they can be easily accessed from the driver’s seat, this does not mean that you should use them while driving.
Lost in thoughts: Daydreaming and thinking about things other than driving are a major cause of accidents and car crashes. Using drugs and alcohol or sleep deprivation can also cause certain thoughts or hallucinations which can make you lose focus.
Moving objects in vehicle: An animal or anything that is moving in your car can divert your attention from driving. If you have animals in your car, make sure that they are secured in a place and are not freely moving.
Distractions on the road: It is common for people to watch a horrible accident on the freeway. Wildlife, roadside attractions, colorful billboards and posters can certainly make you distracted.
Adjusting the mirrors: Your side and front mirrors might need some adjustment over time. It is better that you stop or slow down before going for such changes.
Smoking, eating or drinking: Although smoking holds a minor percentage in the number of accidents caused due to distraction, it should still be avoided while driving. Similarly, you should know that a moving car is not the best place for lunch.
