Collision avoidance systems installed in automobiles work under the simple principle of avoiding an approaching collision. The system operates by taking quick and counteractive measures that if not able to completely avoid the accident, can still reduce its severity. Reducing the severity of a car crash allows minimizing the damage to the vehicles and properties. It also condenses the chance of loss of life. For accomplishing this unique feat, the avoidance tool incorporates a variety of sensors, each being capable of sensing and noticing inescapable situations ahead of the moving automobile.
The collision avoidance systems are being developed further and have become even more advanced in the past few years. Most gadgets come equipped with mounted cameras both at the front and rear end of the vehicle. These cameras enable the system to radar and execute car brakes automatically.
A few important things to know about the working of automobile collision avoidance system are described below:
Monitoring Through a Radar
The most important part of an automobile collision avoiding system is the Radar. The radar operates by collecting radio waves through its modern and sophisticated technology. There are specific units that are carried out by the radar. These units rebound off the automobiles such as cars, buses, trucks and translate back to the avoidance sensor placed near the front mirror of the vehicle.
The radar signals not only study other automobiles but also decode pedestrian movements. This means that if someone suddenly comes running towards the car, the system would be able to quickly alert the driver about it.
Since radio waves move extremely fast, this helps the avoidance collision system in denoting the distance between the vehicle and the other closest car. If the cars are dangerously close to each other, the system notifies the driver by several beeps or if the system is integrated with artificial intelligence, then through oral and visual warnings.
The radar technology also helps the driver in driving safely through severe weather conditions like rain and heavy fog.
Collision avoidance systems depend heavily on the camera supported lane surveillance. There is a special system installed along with the avoidance system called the RD-140. The RD-140 consists of a camera which is utilized for monitoring roads, streets and lanes. The camera also records the movements on the road and decodes lane locations.
It is also advanced enough to deduce visually collected data for sensing the lane marks. This feature aids the driver in smoothly reversing and parking their car. The camera connected to the rear mirror of the car shows the back of the road while reversing and also guides the driver in parking their car. The RD-140 immediately sends signals the radar that alerts the driver that they are drifting out of their lane.
Along with the radar technology and camera mounted sensors, collision avoidance systems also automatically tighten your seatbelts in case the car is advancing at a high speed or comes to an unexpected halt.
